The “Cycle
of Poison” is a bill that has been introduced in Congress by Senator Patrick Leahy. The point of the bill is to stop
harmful pesticide trade between the U.S and other nations, as the U.S often exports harmful pesticides to other nations.
The U.S
exports these insecticides to other nations, particularly those of developing countries, because it is illegal to sell them
at home. However, many of the nations the products are sold to are unaware of the effects that the pesticides can have on
people.
The farmers
overseas that buy these products are more willing to buy the dangerous insecticides because they do not have as much knowledge
about environmental sciences as other countries do. Also, the exporters of the insecticides do not label their products, which
helps to further mislead the farmers.
As a
result of the lack of knowledge about environmental sciences and insecticides in general, the farmers who apply the insecticides
tend to not take precautions while applying the chemicals and can be affected direly by those chemicals. Also, the products
the farmers produce have insecticide residues on them, and when they are shipped to other countries, they carry the poisons
with them.
Many
of the different types of products can then be imported into the U.S. The food that has the toxic chemicals
can easily enter the U.S food system. The toxic insecticides that the U.S sells to other nations comes back to harm us in
the long run, thus making a vicious “Cycle of Poison”.
